About Reddit

Social news and discussion website

Reddit is an American social news and discussion website founded in June 2005 by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian. Its logo combines the alien mascot Snoo with the name “reddit”.

Condé Nast Publications acquired the site in October 2006, and Reddit became a public company through an initial public offering in March 2024. Its communities are called subreddits, and many of them use themed variants of Snoo in their visual styling.

Reddit’s brand page describes the current logo as a stylized Snoo head inside an OrangeRed (#FF4500) conversation bubble, usually paired with the Reddit wordmark, and presents Snoo as a genderless mascot.

Logo history & brand milestones

1 logo record

One logo record is catalogued. The milestones below are dated separately from it.

Founding, the 2005 logo and Snoo, the 2017–2018 desktop redesign and first brand guidelines, and the 2023 rebrand, as recorded in the cited sources. Company and product dates are labelled separately from design changes.

Logo milestone · 2005

Alexis Ohanian designed Reddit’s logo in 2005, while he and Steve Huffman were undergraduates at the University of Virginia. Its alien mascot, Snoo, began as a doodle in the margins of his notebook during a marketing class, and the drawing served as the site’s icon when Reddit launched. A timeline Ohanian published in 2011 showed earlier versions, including one that spelled the name “Reditt”. [1] [7] [8]

Company milestone · 2005-06

Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian launched Reddit with funding from Y Combinator. [1]

Company milestone · 2006-10

Huffman and Ohanian sold Reddit to Condé Nast Publications, the owner of Wired. [1]

Visual identity milestone · 2017

Steve Huffman announced plans to redesign Reddit’s desktop site at the start of 2017, and Reddit showed a first look at the redesign at Web Summit in November 2017. In its 2023 brand announcement, Reddit dated the start of its work to define the Reddit brand to the same year. [4] [5]

Visual identity milestone · 2018-04-02

Reddit began rolling out its redesigned desktop site to about one percent of users. Tavish MacLellan, Reddit’s creative director for the brand, began by auditing its existing brand materials, and Wired described the result as official branding built from scratch around the orange-red colour and Snoo. Artists commissioned by the team redrew Snoo with Ohanian’s original proportions and a more three-dimensional look. [6]

Logo milestone · 2023-11

Reddit began rolling out a rebrand with a new logo, typeface, brand colours and an updated Snoo. Pentagram rendered Snoo in 3D and created the typeface Reddit Display, working with Reddit’s team. In its announcement of 29 November 2023, Reddit said the refreshed logo pairs Snoo, now drawn in 3D and with opposable thumbs for the first time, with a new wordmark based on the Reddit Display typeface. [1] [2] [4]

Company milestone · 2024-03

Reddit became a public company through an initial public offering that raised $600 million. [1]

Design context

Logo design & typography notes

Snoo was created in 2005 while Alexis Ohanian was an undergraduate at the University of Virginia; the name began as “S’new”, a play on “What’s new?”.

Before he left Reddit in 2009, Ohanian often drew special versions of the logo for holidays and events. In 2007 administrators replaced the logo with a whale while users voted on a name for a humpback whale tracked by Greenpeace.

Guidelines introduced with the 2018 redesign keep Snoo’s head blank or neutral, colour its eyes orange-red (#FF4500), give it ears and leave out fingers. The 2023 Snoo gained opposable thumbs, which Reddit described as a first.

Pentagram reduced Reddit’s secondary palette from more than 100 colours to 15, five hues in three shades each, and kept OrangeRed as the signature colour. Reddit’s 2023 announcement names the added colours GuavaPink, LimeGreen, BananaYellow and JuniperBlue.

From the researched record (AI-assisted source review); see research sources.

Researched typography noteReddit Sans (a proprietary company typeface) and Reddit Display, created by Pentagram for the 2023 identity. Pentagram derived Reddit Display from a customised Reddit Sans, turning the rounded counters of lowercase letters into conversation bubbles; Reddit describes the typeface as the basis of the 2023 wordmark.

Logo lettering can differ from a brand’s corporate typefaces.
