Brand profile
Microblogging and social media platform
Tumblr is a microblogging and social media platform on which users post text, images and other multimedia content to short-form blogs. It was founded by David Karp and is operated by the American company Tumblr, Inc., a subsidiary of Automattic.
Karp began developing the service in 2006 at his software consultancy, Davidville, and built it with developer Marco Arment. The name comes from tumblelogs, a term for short-form blogs.
Yahoo bought Tumblr in 2013 for $1.1 billion in cash. After Verizon acquired Yahoo in 2017, Tumblr sat in Verizon's Oath division until Verizon Media announced its sale to Automattic, the operator of WordPress.com, in August 2019.
Tumblr's logo page offers the wordmark, iOS and Android app icons and a standalone 't' icon for download.

Design context
The period at the end of the pre-2018 wordmark referred to the spoken phrase 'Tumblr dot com'. In 2014 Starbucks paid to turn the dot into a coffee cup for a day.
