About Opel

Car manufacturer

Opel Automobile GmbH is a German car manufacturer headquartered in Rüsselsheim am Main and a subsidiary of Stellantis since 16 January 2021.

Opel traces its roots to a sewing-machine maker founded by Adam Opel in Rüsselsheim in 1862. The company began making bicycles in 1886 and produced its first automobile in 1899.

General Motors took a majority stake in Opel in 1929 and full control in 1931. The PSA Group bought Opel and its British sister brand Vauxhall in 2017, and PSA merged with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to form Stellantis in 2021.

Most of the Opel line-up has been sold under the Vauxhall brand in the United Kingdom since the 1980s.

Logo history & brand milestones

1 logo record

One logo record is catalogued. The milestones below are dated separately from it.

The development of the Opel logo from about 1890 to the 2023 Blitz, with the company's founding, as recorded in the cited sources. Versions between 1970 and 2009 are described only where the 2009 source compares them. Company and product dates are labelled separately from design changes.

Company milestone · 1862-01-21

Adam Opel founded the company in Rüsselsheim, where it first produced sewing machines. [1]

Logo milestone · c. 1890

The logo was redesigned to include the words 'Victoria Blitz' for Opel's bicycles; the word Blitz ('lightning') appeared without any depiction of lightning. [1]

Logo milestone · 1909

A redesigned logo showing only the company name, Opel, was used on Opel motorcycles and cars. [1]

Logo milestone · 1910

The logo took the shape of a pointed oval surrounded by laurels, with 'Opel' in the centre. [1]

Logo milestone · 1930s

Opel hood ornaments took the form of a stylized airship, which later appeared on emblems passing through a ring. [1]

Logo milestone · 1964

The lightning bolt with a ring appeared in a yellow rectangle with the Opel name below; by the end of the 1960s the lightning had replaced the airship in the ring. [1]

Logo milestone · 1970

The lightning tails were shortened so the mark fitted in a yellow square that could be shown beside the blue square of the General Motors logo. [1]

Logo milestone · 2009-09

A week before the IAA motor show, Opel presented a remodelled three-dimensional Blitz, slimmer than the 2007 version and with fewer grey tones and stronger blacks, together with the claim 'Wir leben Autos'. With the Insignia, the Opel name had moved inside the ring. [2]

Logo milestone · 2017-06

Opel replaced the chrome-effect Blitz with a flat, two-dimensional black version and adopted the claim 'Die Zukunft gehört allen' (The Future is Everyone's); the campaign for the new Insignia was the first to use both. [1] [3]

Logo milestone · 2020-11-30

Opel presented a new corporate identity with a more finely drawn logo in which the ring is slimmer, a new 'Opel Next' typeface and a neon Opel yellow. The Opel Crossland and Mokka were the first production cars in the new design, in the first half of 2021. [4]

Logo milestone · 2023-06-26

Opel revealed a redrawn Blitz with a sharper lightning bolt that intersects the supporting ring. The company said it would present the emblem at the IAA Mobility show in Munich that year and fit it to production vehicles from 2024. [5]

Design context

Logo design & typography notes

The lightning bolt comes from the logo of the Opel Blitz truck (Blitz is German for lightning), which showed two stripes arranged loosely like a lightning symbol with the words 'Opel' and 'Blitz'. Models of the 1950s simplified this to a horizontal bolt drawn like a stretched letter 'Z'.

The earliest known Opel logo combined a bronze 'A' for Adam with a red 'O' for Opel.

In the mid-1970s the Vauxhall griffin was placed in a matching red square so that the Opel, Vauxhall and General Motors marks could be shown together.

From the researched record (AI-assisted source review); see research sources.

Researched typography noteThe 2020 identity introduced the Opel Next typeface in light, regular and bold versions, developed with Monotype.

Logo lettering can differ from a brand’s corporate typefaces.
