Brand profile

About Audi

Automobile manufacturer

Audi AG is a German manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, and a wholly owned subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. Its four rings stand for the four car companies that formed its predecessor, Auto Union, in 1932.

Auto Union was formed in 1932 by Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer. Volkswagen acquired it in the 1960s, relaunched the Audi brand in 1965 and merged Auto Union with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969, creating the present-day company; its official name was shortened to Audi AG in 1985.

Audi’s emblem is four overlapping rings. Before the Second World War the four-ring badge was used only on Auto Union racing cars, while the member companies kept their own names and emblems.

Logo history & brand milestones

1 logo record

One logo record is catalogued. The milestones below are dated separately from it.

Audi’s origins, the 1932 four rings, the Audi Oval period from the late 1970s to 1994, the 2009 centenary redesign and the move to flat rings in digital media (2016) and on vehicles (2022), as recorded in the cited sources. Company and product dates are labelled separately from design changes.

Company milestone · 1909-07-16

August Horch founded August Horch Automobilwerke GmbH in Zwickau; Audi Automobilwerke GmbH was entered in the commercial register on 25 April 1910. [1]

Logo milestone · 1932

Audi merged with Horch, DKW and Wanderer to form Auto Union AG; the four rings of the logo each represent one of the four companies. [1]

Company milestone · 1969

Auto Union and NSU were merged into Audi NSU Auto Union AG, incorporated on 1 January 1969 with its headquarters at NSU’s Neckarsulm plant. [1]

Logo milestone · After 1977

Following the demise of the NSU brand in 1977, Audi gave less prominence to the four rings and more to the “Audi” script inside a black, later red, ellipse known as the Audi Oval, often shown next to the Volkswagen roundel where the two brands shared dealers under the V.A.G banner. [1]

Company milestone · 1985

The company’s official name was shortened to Audi AG and its headquarters moved back to Ingolstadt; Auto Union GmbH and NSU GmbH were formed to own the historical trademarks. [1]

Visual identity milestone · 1994

After Audi formed its own independent dealer network in 1994, the Audi Oval was phased out and the four rings were given prominence again. Audi Sans, a derivative of Univers, was adopted for marketing materials, corporate communications and the vehicles. [1]

Logo milestone · 2009

For its centenary, Audi updated the logo: the wordmark changed to left-aligned Audi Type and the shading of the overlapping rings was altered. The revised logo was designed by Rayan Abdullah. [1]

Visual identity milestone · 2016

Audi began using two-dimensional rings in digital media. [2]

Logo milestone · 2022-11

Audi introduced flat rings on its vehicles, no longer raised or chrome, to be rolled out on all new models. [2]

Design context

Logo design & typography notes

The company name is based on the Latin translation of its founder’s surname, Horch.

From left, the rings represent Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer.

From the researched record (AI-assisted source review); see research sources.

Researched typography noteAudi Sans, a derivative of Univers, was adopted after 1994. MetaDesign was later commissioned for the corporate typeface Audi Type, designed by Paul van der Laan and Pieter van Rosmalen of Bold Monday; it began to appear in Audi products and marketing in 2009 and is used in the 2009 wordmark.

Logo lettering can differ from a brand’s corporate typefaces.
