Toyota Motor Corporation is a Japanese automobile manufacturer headquartered in Toyota City, Aichi. It was founded by Kiichiro Toyoda and incorporated on 28 August 1937.
Toyota began as a spin-off of Toyota Industries, the machine maker started by Kiichiro’s father, Sakichi Toyoda. While still a department of that company it developed the Type A engine in 1934 and its first passenger car, the Model AA, in 1936.
Early vehicles were sold with a Toyoda emblem. After a public logo competition in 1936 the brand became Toyota; the company says the name was preferred partly because its voiceless consonant is considered clearer in Japanese and partly because トヨタ is written with eight strokes, a number associated with wealth and good fortune.
The current mark of three ovals debuted in October 1989; Toyota says it marked the company’s 50th anniversary and that its development took about five years.

Design context
Logo design & typography notes
Toyota’s announcement says the two inner ellipses stand for the heart of the customer and the heart of the product, and that together they form the “T” of Toyota.
In September 1936 the company ran a public competition to design a new logo.
Toyota says the 1989 mark first appeared on the Celsior luxury model in October 1989 before spreading to other models, and that its outer oval symbolises the world embracing Toyota.
Toyota still uses the katakana logo as its corporate emblem in Japan, including on its headquarters building.
