It was founded in Taipei in 1989 by Tzu-Hsien Tung, Ted Hsu, Wayne Hsieh and M.T. Liao, all of whom had previously worked at Acer as hardware engineers.
According to the company, the name comes from Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology; only the last four letters were used, to give the name a high position in alphabetical listings.
In January 2008 Asus split its operations into three companies: Asus for its own-brand products, Pegatron for contract manufacturing of motherboards and components, and Unihan for non-PC manufacturing.
