Robi is a mobile network operator in Bangladesh, operated by Robi Axiata PLC, in which the Malaysian group Axiata holds a controlling stake. A group identity, an operator brand and an individual service logo are separate levels of branding.
The operator started as Telekom Malaysia International (Bangladesh), a joint venture of Telekom Malaysia and A. K. Khan & Company, and began operations on 15 November 1997 under the brand name AKTEL.
AKTEL became Robi on 28 March 2010. Robi means “sun” in Bengali; at the launch, Michael Kuehner, managing director and CEO of Axiata (Bangladesh), said the Bengali word was chosen to give the brand an emotional link with the culture of Bangladesh.
